60 Minutes - Congo Gold

60 Minutes is doing a segment tonight on gold from the Congo and how horrible the situation is over there. Right now, they're grilling some poor devil from an American jewelry trade organization, intimating that they should stop selling Congo gold.

Right.

Let me know when CBS stops selling ads to Zales and Jared and ...

Blood money is blood money and the last person to handle it was 60 Minutes own Scott Pelley.

Who killed the poor Congolese woman? Scott Pelley in the living room with the pipe wrench.

They took the path of least resistance, they went after Walmart... After all who among the politically correct can be criticized for ridiculing Walmart

Matthew Runci of Jewelers of America was interviewed on the 60 Minutes segment on Congo Gold and everything he said, or rather, everything that was aired was honest and stated with intention to resolve this problem at our end, as jewelers. I am a jeweler and I am a member of the Jewelers of America, and the organization does care and is and has been taking steps to create a system to trace gold back to its mines as we have done with the Kimberley Process and diamonds. It's a valid concerned shared by many in our industry and collectively the organization has created a new group to enable these processes to happen, so we can trace the gold to its mines. We must start somewhere and and its too bad that it's today and not decades ago, but this is what we are dealt to work with in a world of every-changing and rising political conflicts.

Unfortunately, there is not much sympathy coming from the handful of professionals over at National Jeweler. Look at the comments on the left side. Some retailers are complaining that 60 Minutes was only talking about one percent of gold’s resource, so what is the big deal? Well, it is a big deal if you are a person that lives in the region that supplies the one percent, and your life is affected by death, rape or poverty. Just further proof that most people in the jewelry industry do not belong to MENSA.

Gold is fungible, unlike diamonds, which can be individually identified; the analogy does not hold.
