Tobacco Seedlings

All 40 cells in my seed cups, wherein the Nicotiana tabacum seeds were planted, are now filling with tiny plants. This is gratifying. It's also a bit alarming as it means I now need to find homes for 40 tobacco plants. Gulp.

In any case, I've been wrestling with the macro lens on my Nikon D3500 Artillery Piece and not doing so well with it. I finally discovered that the trick was to turn on the flash as I'm sure Tim has told me before. I got a very nice shot of the itty bitty wannabe ciggies using f-stop 22, ISO 100, 1/60 exposure time and the flash.

I left the image very large, so it might be worth a click. Enjoy!

Nice closeup! Yes, it is pretty much impossible to get shots like that without either a flash or direct sunlight, because you need a lot of light in order to squeeze down the aperture enough to get a decent depth of field.

That's the hard thing about starting plants from seed. You want 10 plants, but the seeds are so tiny that you plant 100 just to make sure that enough come up, and then when they all come up it is hard to make the decision about which ones must die to make room for the others.

Making the decisions about which ones to cull will be easy.

I had started lots and lots of seeds for this year's garden, and they were doing nicely.

Then my sister and my nephew called to see it I could come over to Indiana to help with home-improvement projects. With helping them (and my other sister while I was already there), I ended up being away from home for the entire month of April.

All my seedlings, but some tomatoes I planted just before I left, had died.

I'm so sad.
