Working through my ignorance with your help.
Maybe they are actually Triffids. Be careful, they can muscle through pretty stout cages, and watch out for the poisoned tendrils getting to your eyes. See if they dissolve when you spray them with seawater.
I'm more worried about the blinding meteors!
