Why They Drive Tiny Cars In Europe

... because when you live in a medieval town, you share roads made for horses with pedestrians, outdoor cafes, kiosks and what-have-you. The taxi drivers have small to medium sized cars and they're at a disadvantage, particularly when it comes to parking. It has nothing to do with being "green" or saving money, it has everything to do with simple utility.

Here's a typical street scene from Florence.

I bet it also has to do with gas being over $5 a gallon for the last few decades.

So, basically these aren't roads, so much as broad sidewalks that people sometimes drive cars on?

The price of gas is irrelevant. Even if it was 53 cents a gallon, you couldn't use large cars. You just can't clear the corners of buildings in anything larger than a mid-size and even then, it would be scary. We're driving some kind of Opel piece of junk and it's relatively small. Handling it in the alleys of Siena was scary.
