People Unclear on the Concept

A few days ago, I posted a protest piece about a certain right wing blogger. We'll call her Madame Ego since I have pledged never to use her name or link to her again. One way or another, it came to the attention of a left wing blogger by the name of Patriot Boy. He delightedly included it in one of his posts slamming Madame Ego. He completely missed the point of the post and this blog.

The Sratching Post is a libertarian, Catholic, hawkish, flower child blog with a writing style strongly influenced by P. J. O'Rourke. We believe that God made people in his image to do kind things for each other free from the tyranny of local or distant governments.

The whole point of my post about Madame Ego was that she was contributing to the Balkanization of the blogosphere. Madame Ego is clever, venomous and spiteful. Patriot Boy is simply deranged with hate.

The title of his post is "Moving Malkin-Belsen." Three words into his post he fails the reasonability test. He not only calls his opponent a Nazi, but a death camp operator. You know you've lost the argument when you call someone a Nazi. Patriot Boy doesn't just lose, he gets blown out on word three.

Sports analogies usually involve baseball or football. Even my beloved New Orleans Saints couldn't lose that bad that fast. This is like a swim meet where you trip diving into the pool, smack your head on the cement and then swim in little circles near the starting line while everyone else is racing away.

PB's post is written in the form of a letter to Madame Ego, suggesting places where she might wish to move. He addresses her like this.

Michelle Malkin
Our Lady of the Concentration Camps
More of the same.

You can see right away that there's no need to include much more of it here. I'll throw in a little more and then move on. Madame Ego is called a racist.

Well, if I were you, I'd be looking for a community where nearly everyone shares your views, a place like Almost Heaven, Idaho. Although now in decline, Almost Heaven was once the promised land for men who hate brown people as much as you do.
Is there anything more tired and overused than racism? Predictably, PB goes for the jugular with a KKK reference.

So how do you get around not being seen in a very small town? A burka is out of the question. Burkas haven't been given Our Leader's seal of approval yet. You're left with only one option until that finally happens, the Tancredoic robes of the Ku Klux Klan.
If you're going to be hate-filled, you might at least try to be entertaining. PB isn't entertaining, he's just mundane. Nazis, racists, the KKK, it's the standard, overworn bag of tricks for PB. Novelty and imagination are quite beyond him.

PB even includes a picture of Madame Ego with a KKK hood photoshopped on. Technically interesting, but about as clever as sticking your tongue out at someone.

Thanks for the link, PB. I would have hoped you would have read the post and gotten the point, but after reading your blog, it's obvious that you'll need to start with something simpler. May I suggest The Children's Book of Virtues? Look under politeness and kindness for starters.

And spare me the Bill Bennet immorality comments, please, it would only embarass you further. Thinking people can separate messages from messengers.

By the way, PB, you might be interested to know that your readers are very similar to you. To provide a contrast to people like Madame Ego and yourself, at the bottom of my post I linked to one of my World of Good posts about a woman who is paralyzed after saving her children from a tornado. Only about 10% of your readers followed that link. Once they had supped on my criticism of Madame Ego, they had no appetite left for a request for kindness for a beautiful person.

How telling.

Patriot Boy is satire. It is not meant to be taken literally.

It's there for a few laughs. You may not think it's funny, but others do.

Oh, please. Calling your opponents death camp owners and racists is to satire as 5000 pound boulders are to hammers.

Only a fool would confuse the two.

How odd, I am not a fool, yet I find Patriot Boy amusing.

And sometimes you need a hammer, and sometimes you need a 5000 pound boulder.

And sometimes, you turn everything into 5000 pound boulders, to be humerous, and to make a point.

And while I am a 'fool' I did take the time to follow your link, to read more of your thoughts on the issue that PB was discussing. While I think your view is interesting, I was not sufficiently interesting to tempt me to follow your link to whatever cause you are hoping to support.

Here's an idea - instead of insulting your visitors, try being interesting - and maybe some of us will stick around to read more. And down the line? Out of gratitude for all the enjoyment we've recieved from reading your blog, we will be more than happy to contribute to whatever worthy cause you are supporting.

Not that the cause you are supporting isn't worthy - just that I currently consider the worthy causes I am already helping more worthy.

Only a fool would think that Patriot Boy is actually calling his opponents death camp owners.

You honestly think that Patriot Boy is alleging that Malkin operates a death camp.

Wow.

Maybe I'm being too hard on PB and his readers. It could be that he's trying his hardest and finding humor in death camps and calling people racists is the best he can do.

It could also be that this is really what makes his readers laugh and they're just not capable of being entertained by anything more wholesome or sophisticated than this.

I apologize if I have expected too much of you.

You said, "We believe that God made people in his image to do kind things for each other free from the tyranny of local or distant governments." That in mind, I'm wondering why it took you as long as it did to become fed up with Malkin. She regularly uses half-truths, one sided argumens, and lies to defend things such as the Japanese internment in WWII (hence the concentration camp thing). Does the government interning American citizens not fall under your definition of government tyranny? She keeps VDare on her blogroll, despite the fact that they are classified as a hate group by the SPLC (hence the KKK thing).

At least PB's humor doesn't advocate actual harm to people you disagree with, unlike so many on the right-wing side.

You find it hateful that PB would call Malkin "Our Lady of the Concentration Camps"??

You obviously don't know the source of this. Malkin wrote an entire book defending the unjust and illegal internment of innocent Japanese immigrants, and even some who were born here and thus full citizens, living on the West coast during WWII. The title is "In Defense of Internment:..."

I believe that makes his nickname for her more than appropriate. Hell, Malkin certainly isn't ashamed of her position about concentration camps for civilians.

Funny; being a so-called libertarian I would have expected you to find that practice repugnant. Are there any real libertarians left out there?

No, all the Libertarians are dead and all we have left are humourless god botherers.

From Google's blog search tool: Your search - darfur blogurl:patriotboy.blogspot.com - did not match any documents

Let's not fool ourselves with this concentration camp nonsense. The real thing is going on right now in Darfur, but PB saves his death camp vitriol for...a political opponent who blogs. PB never even mentions Darfur.

Sickening.

Time to go and work on a World of Good post. Why don't the rest of you keep talking amongst yourselves. I'll be back soon to check on you. Really.

Huh, for someone so committed to stopping the atrocities in Darfur, you "used to like [Malkin's] site." The site of someone who wrote a popular book defending concentration camps and internment during WWII. Japanese born Americans were rounded up, based upon nothing more than their national origin, and many died in those internment camps. And yet with the rule of law and our Constitution in place, we permitted that to happen. Not in some two bit dictatorship, but in the middle of the 'City on the Hill' that the US is supposed to represent to the rest of the world.

Does Malkin compare with those responsible for Darfur? Of course not. But while a google search may not turn up any posts on Darfur by PB (and the purpose of PB's website is not to be a clearing house for info on concentration camps, nor does it advertise itself as such), at least PB never wrote that he "used to like" someone who supports the idea that people can and should be rounded up solely based upon their race or national origin, whether in the US or in Darfur.

Did you disown Malkin for In Defense of Internment? No, by your own admission, you liked her site up until the time she published the contact info of some peace activists.

And that I find to be truly sickening. One of the ideals of America was/should be/could have been the idea that we will attempt to protect people everywhere from things like concentration camps and internment. So, yeah, it's sickening what is happening in Darfur, and we are doing nothing. But it is almost as sickening that people now believe it is perfectly ok, in some circumstances, to arrest people because of where they or their parents were born, despite the hardships they endured to come here, and lock them away until some other completely unrelated people stop scaring us or fighting with us.

You want to use Godwin's law and declare victory? Go ahead. You and PB dislike Malkin for different reasons. Good for both of you.

Here's an idea: while you're still comfortably folded in the bosom of a movement conservatism that imagines global warming to be a ginned-up leftist conspiracy, Fox News to be a plucky lone hero battling hordes of leftist MSM networks, and the ACLU to be secretly planning to legalize kiddie porn... you may want to hold off on the pious lectures about the impropriety of PB's humour and how you're above all the hate in the blogosphere. It's encouraging to see you've at least got the wit to recognize "Miss Ego" for the lightweight she is, but try not to break your arm patting yourself on the back for your blinding insight. The fact that the Evil Leftist Hordes had this figured out a long time before you did should maybe inspire a little humility, instead of smugness.
