KT Cat (Bondage / Dungeon)

At work, some people are listing their pronouns in their online profiles. Why? As far as I can tell, your pronouns announce your sexual preferences. Is there a reason I need to know this? Do you think we're going to sleep together?

Guess again.

The Fermentation Chamber Experiment Continues

I've reassembled my trashcan fermentation chamber for my tobacco. This time, it's in the garage, but it's got a 40W bulb inside to add some heat. It looks to be working well, raising the temperature by 5 degrees so far.

The reflection at the bottom comes from an inch or two of water.

You definitely need to click on this one to read it.

We'll let this go a while longer, but it's doing that I want it to do. It keeps the chamber from getting too cold without boiling it. I also have 60W bulbs I can try, just to see the difference.

The discontinuity in the graph above comes from the start of the experiment. I'd had one sensor in the garage and one in the house, just to see the differences there.

Over on the plant side of the equation, my Tennessee sprouted after a week while my Virginia variety took things at a more leisurely, Southern pace. It's coming up nicely now, too.

Addendum: The graph shows that the inch or so of water in the fermentation chamber takes care of the humidity issue perfectly. I think we're ready to go. Now all we need is some tobacco leaves. Come on, seedlings!

The whole “my pronouns” thing still mystifies me. So I can ignore the whole thing if I just use their proper noun (name). But that’s not what they want (and besides it defeats the point of having pronouns). They want me to waste memory trying to keep dozens/hundreds/thousands of specific individualized proper noun - pronoun combinations. I guess that my complete indifference to the pronouns people use to refer to me is part of my lack of understanding as to why others care, sometimes passionately.

Further, it strikes me that by asking everyone to keep track of all these specific pronouns, they are insisting on subdividing people into ever smaller groups. Meanwhile we are supposed to treat everyone as equals. But the further we divide, the more likely we are to find some (real or perceived) inequality. Crazy.

I suspect that the ultimate end-state will be to just drop all gender in pronouns. "I" and "you" aren't gendered, after all, and nobody is bothered by that. Most likely, within about 10 or 20 years everyone will have gotten tired of worrying about it, and will just default to "they" for anyone that they don't know really well.

Incidentally, when I've used incandescent bulbs like that for a long-term heat source, they had limited lifespan, burning out after about a month. That will probably be enough for what you are doing, but I wouldn't use them for anything else afterwards.

If it turns out you do want to run them for longer, though, I found that if you put them on a less-than-110 volt DC power supply (I used 45 volts), they last almost indefinitely. They also generate less visible light at lower voltage, which might keep photosynthetic algae from growing in there.

Tim says: “I suspect that the ultimate end-state will be to just drop all gender in pronouns.”. That makes perfect sense (which in and of itself probably precludes it being correct). Nonetheless I will suggest that we chose a set of neutral pronouns that are used for humans only.

Here is my suggestion:

As a Subject: He/she becomes Ne. Ex: Ne is doing very well in school.
As an Object: Him/Her becomes Ner. Ex: They tried to convince ner that the earth is flat.
As a Possessive: His/Hers becomes Nis. Ex: Nis favorite color is green.
As a Possessive Pronoun: His/Hers becomes Nis. Ex: That green car is nis.
As a Reflexive: Himself/Herself becomes Nerself. Ex: Ne thinks highly of nerself.

I am truly tempered to use these and then get really offended by anyone who fails to use them.

Oh, and on a different subject (but brought to mind by “being offended”). I can’t help but wonder how the Progs who’ve bought Teslas feel about Elon Musk using his profits from them to buy Twitter in order to open that ‘free speech platform’ to actual Free Speech. It makes me laugh.
