The city has decided to thin out the vegetation in the canyons and it's using this to get rid of invasive species at the same time. In the canyon near our house, they're removing eucalyptus and palm trees. The native scrub oaks and so forth are being left alone.
Since it's a canyon with relatively steep ways in and out and the trees are large, they are tearing them out and then using helicopters to haul them away. Dig the photo below. I left it rather large, so click until you can click no more. Enjoy!

Where does eucalyptus come from? I new palm trees were imported, dont know that I would call them invasive.
Way back when, the railroad companies imported eucalyptus trees from Australia, thinking they would make great railroad ties. The trees grow fast and are big and strong. Yay! Unfortunately, the trees also twist as they grow, making the wood completely unreliable for construction. Whoops! So now we have groves of eucalyptus trees that do nothing for us save out-compete the local trees.
