At Justin's recommendation, I'm planning on getting a Canon Rebel XT in the near future. With that in hand, I will be able to shoot all kinds of amazing pictures. I might just make a book out of them using Blurb. Check it out. While you're there, take a look at the sample books they've got on that site.

The Canon is a good consumer level digital SLR, but go somewhere where you can hold one and the equivalent Nikon. The Canon is designed for smaller hands than the Nikon, and feels like there is more plastic. I reality they are almost identical and either is a good choice. Just see which one feels right.
KT, you might want to move up to the XTi, Canon just recently pushed out a new Rebel model so those are probably cheaper now.
I've never used a digital Nikon but the film ones I've used were nice cameras.
Nikon/Canon is like Ford/Chevy or Advil/Tylenol, more or less just personal preference. Probably the main reason I went Canon is because that's what my high school's journalism program had.
