The Diving Bell's Maiden Voyage

Maiden Immersion?

I don't have time right now to edit the full video, but here is a tiny tidbit taken in the calm waters of Mission Bay.


Here's what I learned:
  1. The diving bell is water tight.

  2. The glass did not distort the image. You can tell that when the lens is above the water.

  3. The murkiness of the water makes the thing look out of focus when submerged.

  4. Mission Bay is boring.

  5. It was fun to do this.

You need to put a bit of black tape over the record light or whatever that yellow light causing the glare is.

That came out surprisingly good, especially the shots at the air/water interface. Just slow down the replay framerate maybe 20-30%, and you'll have simulated "majestic crashing surf" with waves that are just a few inches high!

Was that a piece of kelp at about 1:00, or a bit of trash? But otherwise, yeah, the bottom of Mission Bay looks about as exciting as the bottom of Lake Superior.

I think that, in your list, items 1 and 5 are the really, really critical ones. I wonder if providing a red LED light source in a second jar would help to overcome the blueness of the underwater natural light?

Thanks for the comments, all. Covering the recording lamp with electrical tape is a great idea.

Tim, I hadn't considered playing with the playback speed on this, I was so fixated on the underwater aspect. Yes, that blob drifting by is kelp. The red light idea is a good one, too. Thanks!

What I need to do now is create a focus target (one with colors and letters) and do some range experiments to see where objects become clear underwater.
