I'm in Charleston, SC this week, eating tasty Southern food and otherwise having a good time. On the flight out yesterday I was reading Richard Rohr's
Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer. The woman next to me was reading
Harper's Bazaar. I read about giving away the world to join with God, she was flipping through pages of conspicuous consumption.
She seemed like a nice enough person and for all I know she works at a convent. The juxtaposition of our reading, however, was delicious. I think I got the better end of the deal. The
Harper's Bazaar photo spread containing Madonna was pitiful. What's wrong with that woman, anyway?
