Have you ever wondered what the story was behind this?
I just read the essay and it's unlike anything I had expected. It is plain-spoken, bold and predictive. Here's an illustrative snippet.
(T)he figure of Adolf Hitler strode over a cringing Europe with all the swagger of a conqueror. Not the mere fact that the Führer brought 10,500,000 more people (7,000,000 Austrians, 3,500,000 Sudetens) under his absolute rule made him the Man of 1938. Japan during the same time added tens of millions of Chinese to her empire. More significant was the fact Hitler became in 1938 the greatest threatening force that the democratic, freedom-loving world faces today.
For those who feel the Catholic Church was utterly supine, Time had this to say.
In religion, the two outstanding figures of 1938 were in sharp contrast save for their opposition to Adolf Hitler. One of them, Pope Pius XI, 81, spoke with “bitter sadness” of Italy’s anti-Semitic laws, the harrying of Italian Catholic Action groups, the reception Mussolini gave Hitler last May, declared sadly: “We have offered our now old life for the peace and prosperity of peoples. We offer it anew.”
That was only partially supine. In the end, it wasn't "offering our lives" in the sense the Pope meant that did the trick by 1945, it was offering healthy portions of artillery shells and bullets as well.
Still, the writers at Time and maybe a couple in the Vatican were clear-eyed in their assessment of the situation. Our assessment of what is happening today? Not so much. Citizen journalists are putting the situation right in front of our noses, just as they did with the illegal alien invasion under Biden, but, unlike the writers at Time in 1938, our Smart Set is in total denial.
This week, 1,360 undocumented illegals have entered the UK via 22 dinghies.
