Happy Memorial Day!

This is my first Memorial Day without my father who was a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam. It's a bit empty not having him around, telling his war stories. I guess I'll have to get used to that.

Pilots from  my dad's outfit in Korea, the 731st Bomb Squadron. He's not in the photo, but I'm sure he knew some of these guys.
Happy Memorial Day, Dad.

I've always been conflicted about things like Memorial Day. On the one hand, I do deeply appreciate the people who have put their lives on the line for the sake of the country.

On the other hand, I know that there are at least some veterans, like my father, who deeply dislike "remembrance" events like Memorial Day, because they really don't want to be reminded of it. Usually with good reason. And I wonder, who are these events for, really?
