Olympic BMX Racing

...is the most ridiculous sport there. I was watching the NBC coverage last night as they breathlessly talked about how the riders risked it all in a sport that took guts, determination and skill.

Then they showed highlights of grown people riding children's bikes in the dirt.

If your Olympic team shops for their gear at Toys R' Us, is it really a sport worthy of the Games?

It looked positively ridiculous. The riders, with their knees practically hitting their chins because the bikes were several sizes too small for them, looked like nothing so much as college students late for a crucial calculus test who siezed the nearest transportation device to race to class only to find out it was their little brother's bicycle.

If that's an Olympic sport, then I've got another one to recommend. Big Wheel racing. Here's a taste of what it could look like.

As an aisde, I was told that the Olympic Committee has decided that softball shouldn't be an Olympic sport any more. You knew this was going to happen when the softball teams forgot the most important piece of equipment of all.

A keg of beer.

Don't we already have this one in the winter Olympics?

That sucks about softball being eliminated. So is BMX an official event or one of those trial events?

BMX is an official event for the first time this year. Softball was eliminated because they decided it was "too American." They almost decided to eliminate baseball for the same reason, which is ridiculous considering it's popularity in Japan, Korea and the whole of the Americas.

I'm a purist...Track and Field, Swimming, Gymnastics.....

Everything else is superfluous to me.....

'cept the baby bikes down curvy roads does have a certain draw

I could be wrong but I think baseball is out also.

KT, I watched the BMX finals this evening and I found the "Chinese downhill" aspect of it be highly entertaining. Roller derby-esque, if you will.

Wollfie, I'm old-school as well but as long as they're letting in fencing and archery and equestrian, et al., let me at least enjoy something that has some Saturday morning cartoon visual appeal to it.

ACME racing gear, anyone? Beep-beep...

I'm a purist, too. Of a different kind. Women's volleyball, women's gymnastics, women's diving, synchronized swimming, women with guns...

Women on Hot Wheels could fit into that...

Okay, let me set this straight. They may be on little bikes, but there is NOTHING little about what they do. They're hitting 40 mph before they even get to the first jump, and some of them are over 40 foot gaps! Anyone who has never raced will never understand how hard it is. They are some of the most athletic people on the planet. They are athletes. Never get that wrong.

Those bikes are VERY EXPENSIVE.....average bikes go between 400-500$ those are special bikes and are VERY costly, it is about racing to the end of the track, no different than running around the track, and the bikes do fit them, they have certain sizes for all ages and height..both my son's are into this sport and it is way better than your typical team sport...Very dangerous sport, you ever remember skinning your knees up riding the streets? Dont be so judgemental!

Guys, come on. I know they train hard and I know it's dangerous, but if that was the qualifications for an Olympic sport, then we ought to include Ostrich Racing.

So discus, essentially flinging a plate, or shotput, glorified boulder throwing are any more meaningful as sports? The olympics suffers from little spectacle and patchy coverage. At least BMX is simple to follow, it's fast paced and exciting and can draw the next generation of Olympic spectators. The old 'kids bike' jibe for BMXers is very tired, would it be more credible on 24" wheels? 26"? what frame size makes it adult enough?

KT Cat, your an idiot. What sports have you've played? Probably nothing, your fat ass just sits on a computer and talks shit about things you have no idea about....... I bet when you get off the computer you pick up a video game controller and a bag of chips. not enough talent to get up off the couch and try something active, because if you did you would not be talking shit. BMX is a very difficult sport that takes a lifetime of dedication to become good at. So until you've actually tried it, dont knock it. And dont ever compare it with riding a ostrich or big wheels, it just shows what a moron you are.

I actually know Mike Day (If you dont know who that is hes the blonde in the pic, he won the silver medal) I use to be in his class and race against him for many years, one of the most talented and hardest working people I have ever met. Sucks when you have an internet guy with a cat fetish who tries discredit people and a sport.

Umm, would full contact Kung Fu count as a sport to you, Eric? I did that for nearly a decade.

So you mean to tell me that Olympic Jogging is more of a sport than pro BMX.. this whole blog is just a way for a little bitch to complain about something he has no ability to try. get your fat ass off the computer and ride!
