Link of the Day

Dig this photo from North Korea in Der Spiegel. A car powered by ... wood? That makes no sense at all to me. You'd have to remove the internal combustion engine and substitute a steam engine in its place, right?

Wood gas generator. Used in ww2 in europe. actually generates carbon monoxide. coal was used in the cities
to produce lighting cooking and heating gas. methane supplanted it.

Yes. See this entry for more details. These were being bandied about a lot among farmers back during the 1970s oil shocks, my father was actually considering this (along with capturing methane from our manure piles) as ways of reducing the amount of fuel we had to buy.
