Dove the Kelp Beds Today

... off of La Jolla Cove. It looked a lot like this.

It was our first dive without an instructor and it went well. We learned a lot - particularly that we need to know our hand signals. There were a couple of clearings in the kelp where it would have been nice to just stop and take a look around. Since we'd all agreed ahead of time on a direction to swim, we just kept going in that direction. While we saw lots of cool things, we didn't see as much as we would have had we spent 10 minutes nosing around in one spot.

That's a lot of kelp. There certainly look to be a lot of things to see there. I assume that you have your Playsport down there with you?

What were those big yellow fish? They certainly aren't camouflaged, do they have some particularly noxious defense against getting eaten?

The Playsport won't work below 10'. There are nice underwater cameras that work well at these depths, but I'm still too inexperienced to handle them and dive at the same time.

The big, colorful fish are Garibaldi, our state fish. Not sure just how they get along being so colorful, but there are lots of them, so whatever they're doing, it's working.

I understand there are some pretty big sharks around the cove. See any sight of them.
