Canned Crab

Last night, I made stuffed mushrooms. I was running late, so I bought canned crabmeat instead of crab legs that had to be cracked open to get the meat. The result: meh.

I've never used canned crabmeat before, but after doing so, I wondered if anyone has ever made anything worthwhile with it. It's not that it tasted bad, it just didn't taste at all.

That's the same problem I have with frozen shrimp. The flavor that you get with fresh shrimp is mostly lost after freezing and thawing.

While I'm no gourmet or anything, I actually think the fake crab (actually fish that has been flavored to taste crablike) is pretty good in recipes that call for crab. It isn't identical to crab as it comes out of the legs, but it is certainly closer than the canned stuff.

Of course, what I *really* need to do is start raising crayfish to eat, since the only way to get fresh "seafood" around here would be to grow it locally.

Good point. I definitely don't use the pre-cooked shrimp, but I've had times where I've had to go with the previously-frozen shrimp.

I hadn't thought of doing that Tim. A very clever idea. Living in a small town in eastern Arizona, it's hard to get good seafood.
