Two months ago, I wrote that when secession comes to America, it will be born of practical necessity rather than political fervor. Despite what the loudmouths say, we're not all that divided of a country. Hang out with Normals doing Normal things and politics aren't that big of a deal. The basics of life are a big deal.
(C)ops will continue to flee blue cities. Like an army that knows it is defeated, the soldier-cops will melt away, leaving blue America with no tools to maintain order.
Note that I'm not talking politics, I'm talking about the practical aspects of providing a livable society for the average dude and dudette. This is the logical next film in the franchise where the Elites don't understand how things work. Daunte's death and the subsequent riots were perfectly predictable. The Elites' response guarantees another.
That can't go on forever.
You could write this same blog post about the debt, the squandering of our human capital and the dissolution of our borders. All contribute to an unlivable society for Normals.
There won't be secession for political reasons, it will be a secession born of sheer resignation and exhaustion.
Since that post, several states have outlawed the teaching of Critical Race Theory, aka Modern Nazi Race Theory. Florida just told the NCAA to take their tournaments and shove them as they banned men from competing in women's sports. Several Oregon counties voted to secede and join Idaho if they're allowed. Now comes this.
ATLANTA — Just a few days after Beth Weaver moved from the suburbs to a new townhouse in this city's wealthy Buckhead district, she began to worry that she had made a mistake.
One night she sat on her balcony and watched a thief rifle through her BMW. A few weeks later, someone broke into her family’s truck. In November, there was a shootout on her narrow street lined with townhouses that start at a half-million dollars...
That feeling of not being safe has persisted as crime in the city has skyrocketed — the result, some say, of the pandemic and the civil unrest that followed the killing of George Floyd last summer. Some residents and business leaders in this affluent, predominantly White (sic*) enclave north of downtown think they have a solution: They want Buckhead to become its own municipality...
“The mayor and the city council have been making bad decisions, so at what point does anyone with a brain say, ‘Enough?’ ” said Bill White, chairman of the Buckhead Exploratory Committee. “If crime is out of control and you are doing nothing about it, you are finished as a city.”
The WaPo and other progressive mouthpieces want to make it about race, but it's not. When I was in Jackson, Mississippi, which is majority black, I saw good parts and bad parts. I stopped by an outlet mall where the customers were about 80% black and most of them well-dressed and clearly affluent. There's no way on Earth they would put up with their home neighborhoods becoming unsafe.
Secession, if it comes, will happen for practical reasons.
Sorry, academia, but practical considerations dominate life decisions. |
"the soldier-cops "
ReplyDeleteWhoa, whoa, whoa, hold on there. Do you seriously want, or expect, the cops to act like soldiers? Because I don't. And I don't think the vast majority of the rest of the population does, either. Police are supposed to be members of the community[1] who have been empowered to deal with troublemakers in a way that is generally seen as justice. They are not supposed to be an occupying external force maintaining control of a hostile population through the treat of violence.
Countries where soldiers do cop-work have a well-deserved reputation for being authoritarian hell-holes. I don't think you really want that.
[1] Our local police are just people, who I am generally more likely to meet socially than in their normal line of duty. Relations between the various police groups and everyone else are pretty good, and there isn't an excessive amount of crime. But I bet that if they were to start throwing their weight around and acting like an occupying military force, There Would Be Trouble.
Just heard on Garage Logic, the founder of the Minneapolis chapter of BLM, has resigned and put out a scathing video about the ugly truth. Basically, he said that the Teachers Union controls BLM, and the Democrats. I just got thru it

He's got an impressive resume.
There hasn't been a peep from BLM about the children that were killed by gang bangers that now rule Minneapolis thanks to Philippe Cunningham and the rest of the geniuses on the City Council.
In Seattle, they've been "soldier cops" for some time.
ReplyDeleteNo, it doesn't work well.
"Soldier-cops" was simply analogizing them to infantrymen for the purposes of visualizing desertions more easily. I can picture soldiers dropping their weapons and running easier than I can cops walking away.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't want soldier-cops. Still, I like the analogy. They're effectively infantry units whose job it is to control territory. That doesn't mean their militaristic, it's that they serve the same function - to maintain order.
