Gopher Snake
Out here in the coastal desert that is San Diego, both weeks of Spring are over and Summer has begun. It's in the 80s today, which means it's a great day to see snakes in the canyons. Like this charming fellow we came across while out on maneuvers with the Catican Guards.

Gopher snake. Non-poisonous and relatively calm.
He looks like a fine snake. My daughters would love him.
They're very docile and can be handled, but they don't really like it.
Oh, neat! I've heard of them, but the only live ones I've seen were tiny-- two or three fingers wide size tiny, less than two feet even when you are startled.
