Wouldn't government support for telecommuting be more futuristic and environmentally friendly than high-speed rail? Wouldn't it be better for office buildings to be unnecessary and instead of people being moved about in big boxes, not having them move about at all?
Win the future!

For jobs that allow for it, I'm all for the telecommute option. I think a lot of predominately "administrative" type functions could be done from the comfort of your own home. You'd probably only have to physically go to the office about once or twice a week to file necessary paper records and similar actions.
Wow. Less cars on the road, less gas being consumed, lower demand for oil, less global warming.... It would be the Utopia the guv'ment has been searching for.
I'm not a good telecommuter. I don't have a good workspace at home, and I get easily distracted when I'm home. Other's in my group rarely come in the office. Works well for them.
On the other hand, the metro area is trying to build a light rail between the 2 downtowns. All of the fights over it has already made it impossible to not loose lots of money. Last I heard, the time of the trip will take 4 times longer than the highway, in light/no traffic. And in gridlock, it will be about the same. Because they are going to stop at just about every street along the corridor.
I'll never ride that.
What if companies got together and built satellite offices in the 'burbs? You'd get your own cubicle and IT gear and connectivity. The building would be within 5 minutes of your house. Your company would lease a cube for you to use.
