If Your Eye Causes You To Sin ...

From Matthew 18:
Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come! If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into fiery Gehenna.
Colbert King cares deeply for the plight of black children born to single mothers, but he's not willing to pluck out our eyes to stop the tidal wave of destruction crushing blacks in America today. Elsewhere, Davy Rothbart writes about how his addiction to porn is damaging his life, but he's not willing to cut off his hand.

It's an old addage of Peter Drucker's that any strategy that requires superstars to carry it out is no strategy at all. Both Colbert King and Davy Rothbart want the abuse to go away - the children to be given a loving home and the girlfriends/wives to be cherished, but they want to do it still awash in a sea of porn. You just can't expect the average person to be exposed to it day and night, have it available at a moment's notice on the Internet or on TV and successfully fight it endlessly.

Would you put a heroin addict in a room full of needles and heroin and expect them to stay clean?

It's possible to entertain ourselves without immersing ourselves in a slime that results in wrecked relationships and abused children.

Like India Pictures, I really enjoyed this post and others like it.

It was most pleasuring growing up with Bob Newhart's "Bob Newhart's Button-down Mind" and the African-American entertainer Bill Cosby and his "Bill Cosby is a Funny Fellow...Right."

Keep up the good work Youtube is sensational.

The porn confessional was a good companion piece to that lecture video you linked to a few months ago.

I was also struck by New York magazine, a fairly mainstream publication, publishing an article with

A) Detailed narration of multiple sexual encounters in clinical detail.

B) The breezy inclusion of the lowest sexual slang in the exposition (never mind the quotations).

India and Dean, I am gratifying my writing style with your pleasant comments.

Jeff, If I was an atheist or agnostic, I'd be amazed at how some Dude, living 2000 years ago, long before the discovery of biochemistry, could have said things that were later born out by science.

It's almost like He knew something.

Jeff, along the lines of your points, I was unpleasantly surprised at the sexual references in the Super Bowl ads. There was one Coke Zero ad (a Coke Zero ad?) where a couple is on a date and the guy is thinking, "I want to sleep with her, I want to sleep with her, I want to sleep with her, I want to sleep with her..."

Wow. As I watched, I wanted to see a slideshow of abused children's faces to flick across the screen. If you're going to take the benefits, then take the costs, too, guys.

re Superbowl. We were invited over to another family's house for the event, and the commercials were a rude reminder of why we run a tv-free home. I lost count of the times our hosts were fumbling for the remote to hit the mute button, or we were commanding our sons to look away from the screen. But the Pac won, so I guess it's all good.

Jeff, the Coke Zero one was the worst. The dude is sitting across from his date audibly thinking "I want to sleep with her, I want to sleep with her, I want to sleep with her, I want to sleep with her, I want to sleep with her..."

You mean they actually showed THAT ON Tv? oN A COMMERCIAL? And I bet the woman in the commercial was good looking, too. DON'T get me started on that..

Like Jeff, we have a tv free home. I watched the adds online the next day. The mattress ad was embarrassing as well. Whats wrong with leaving sex out of the sale?
