Now mind you, there are "agricultural" sites out there that say the first flowers are males and you have to wait for the ladies to arrive, but I'm not buying it. We all know what has happened to these sites. They're all in the pay of Big, Gay Watermelon.
It's a conspiracy, I tells you!
All my watermelons, muskmelons, and cucumbers were producing all male flowers until just a day or two ago. Finally, I see two femal cuce flowers open today, and one female each of watermelon and muskmelon that may open tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, most of my tomato plants seem to have a virus which stunts and deforms their new growth.
*sigh*
At the same time, I have three summer squash plants ... and at least one of them produced a couple of squash days before I saw any male flowers.
ReplyDeleteIlion, do the male flowers last long enough for the females to arrive? I'm concerned that my male flowers will wilt and fall off before the girls get here. Do I need to harvest the pollen?
ReplyDeleteThe flowers last jest a day (possibly two, but probably not). But, I don't think you need to worry about running out of male flowers; there will be more.

I think it rained last night. When I checked on the garden at first light, the leaves of the cantelope planyss (and some tomato plants) had strings of dewrops on the upper side at the edges. Seeing it was a minor joy.
