I Have A New Rule

From now on, no matter where I'm headed, if I go through Houston, stop there, rent a car and drive to my destination.

I'm sitting in IAH on my way to Baton Rouge for Saturday's LSU game and, as usual, we're delayed by the weather. The drive to Baton Rouge is 4 hours. The delay will end up about 5 or 6.

When wife kitteh and I went to Mobile a few years back, we got stuck overnight in Houston after arriving around 1 pm.

Never again. Fly to Houston and drive from there.

  1. Several years ago Mrs Ohioan flew through IAH, and a huge thunderstorm hit shortly after she got off the plane. After a few hours delay, she finished her connecting flight to DC, arriving just after midnight. Once she got to the hotel she discovered that her suitcase was, in her words, “full of water”. She spent the next 3.5 hours ironing her dress to dry it (she needed the dress for her brief the next morning at 8AM). Anyways, she was less than pleased. After that we bought new hard sided suitcases and I refused to take routes through IAH.

  2. I haven't flown in over 20 years. With the current security theater, and now the added covid-1984 theater, I would not subject myself to that.

  3. I can sympathize, Ilion, but driving from San Diego to Baton Rouge is a bit much.

  4. Pshaw! Two,three days! ... if you drive non-stop.

Didn't your ancestors count it a good day if they made 10 miles on the journey *to* the Left Coast?

  5. Ilion - My ancestors didn’t trek to the left coast, but Mrs Ohioan did, with two kids in diapers. We made it from Michigan to SD in 7 days. If we didn’t have the kids, I think we could have done it in 3 or 4. But we were much longer then. So I’d guess it would take us at least 3, maybe 4 days to get to Baton Rouge now.

  6. When I was in college, my church group would limited-stop drive from north of Indianapolis to near Cape Canaveral for spring break. As I recall, we made the trip in 26-28 hours.
