Never Shop For Food When You're Hungry!

... or you might go crazy like I did. Check out my shopping cart from Tuesday. Note that there are only two of us at home.

MOAR MEAT!
In all seriousness, I went to Food 4 Less, my favorite grocery store and a hangout for the homeless that live along the San Diego River, and bought about 15 pounds of meat to make Louisiana Brown Stock. That turned out well, but throwing away that much boiled meat as detritus from the operation bothers me. I'm going to see if I can turn it into a meat spread for sandwiches.

  1. Worth a try. Even if it doesn't have enough flavor for humans to care much for it, I bet you could use it to make some food for your dogs that they would like at least as well as the commercial food. Maybe blend it with whatever you are feeding them now.

  2. Great idea, Tim. I was going to do that, but it includes pork and wife kitteh is concerned about giving the dogs pork. I'm not sure why, I'm pretty sure that chihuahuas in the wild regularly hold barbecues and make carnitas tacos.

  3. Add in BBQ sauce, maybe?

  4. Or put it in ziplock baggies, freeze it, and use it basically like tofu-- relatively flavorless protein filler.

  5. Ok, her concern about pork in dog food got me wondering, so I looked it up. Seems there are two concerns:

    1. Trichonosis. Since this meat got thoroughly boiled, it would not be a concern in this case

    2. Indigestible pork fat. Since fat is one of the things that gets extracted into the broth, there should be little or none left in the meat, so that shouldn't be a problem either.

Although, there might be one other thing. Human meat is rumored to taste a lot like pork. Maybe she just doesn't want to take a chance on them developing a taste for human flesh.
