Is It Possible To Be A Good Chemist If You Don't Support Gay Marriage?

How about a weightlifter? A Beekeeper? Anything?

Dig this.

Aside: We've got friends who recently attended a lesbian wedding. They'd known the, err, bride (?) for years and had seen her have many boyfriends, including one particularly serious relationship that lasted for 4 years. When she announced her engagement, they were shocked to find it was to a woman. Two thoughts leaped into my mind almost immediately.
  1. So much for being born gay.
  2. It reeked of surrender. When they guy didn't commit, she found commitment wherever she could.
The wedding was a wacky, costumed, themed thing. Neither of the brides (?) were in any way connected to the theme, so I guess they picked it because the Star Trek uniforms were all rented out at the costume shop. As they described it, I just felt like it was a cheap mockery of the institution of marriage. There weren't going to be any kids, there wasn't any real point other than to throw a crazy party and get attention. I know, I wasn't there, I don't know the people, blah blah blah, but that's what it sounded like.

And yes, I know that hetero couples who can't conceive get married, too. But those ceremonies are a cultural nod to the primacy of the one man - one woman relationship that is the source of all human life. That's got to count for something, right?

Well, maybe not. It probably counts about as much as the whole #blacklivesmatter thing.

We don't really care about people, we only care about being hip.

  4. Reading up on a Catholic Chinese Saint who died in the Boxer Rebellion, he suffered from an opium addiction which caused scandal but he never denied his faith.

In decades to come there will be martyrs defending marriage as one man & one woman, and it wouldn't be surprised if one of those martyrs/saints will be openly gay.

I had a school friend who I've bumped into a few times since high school. She initially thought that she'd marry her high school sweetheart shortly after graduation. The next time I saw her was in college. She'd lived with the guy for years and they never married. She was bitter about their break up. Recently, I looked at her facebook page. She's now a lesbian. Certainly not born that way, just frustrated with men, and found an alternative.

If extremist Christians ever stopped obsessing over gays they'd have to actually help the poor. Now that'd be extremely Christian. I know you, unlike most, do help the poor. But still, must you obsess over gays?

  7. Things Christians Do while obsessing about gayality....

The differences in charity between secular and religious people are dramatic. Religious people are 25 percentage points more likely than secularists to donate money (91 percent to 66 percent) and 23 points more likely to volunteer time (67 percent to 44 percent). And, consistent with the findings of other writers, these data show that practicing a religion is more important than the actual religion itself in predicting charitable behavior.

  8. @Anon....

Go to the link. The blog is about family structure and well being.

It actually praises a gay individual being a godfather to a child.

Anon, you've made the point thoue. It's not about Christians obsessing about gays, but secularism obsessing about Christians who care about the poor, which includes the effects of fragile families in urban communities with fraudulent accusations of homophobia.

The present (mis)use of the word "gay" is meant to denote leftist identity politics. The *purpose* of using the word "gay" to mean "afflicted with homosexual desire" is to pigeon-hole all persons afflicted with homosexual desire into a faceless mass useful to leftism; it is to declare what attitudes these persons are allowed to have with respect to sexual expression. Thus, while this hypothetical martyr may be afflicted with homosexual attraction, he or she will not be "gay", by definition.

  10. Gay for shorthand.

Gay Catholics online prefer for conversation sake just say gay, but I understand your point on leftist identity.

Actually, the obsession is totally the other way around. I've been to over 3000 Masses in my lifetime and I've never heard a homily about gays. I volunteer at Catholic Charities, my friends visit prisons weekly, we all donate tons of money (as Trigger Warnings alludes) to charities. We don't give a hoot about gays one way or another. We just ask that you leave us alone to do our work instead of attacking, suing, fining, shaming, etc.

Any time you want to drop the whole thing, it's fine with me.

    Amen.

Anon's bleat reminds me of the David Foster Wallace quote,
You will become way less concerned with what other people think of you when you realize how seldom they do.
