The Ultimate Valentine's Day Gift

... is, without a doubt, a rusty, possibly non-functional, 1955 Filter Queen Model 500, "Golden Monarch" vacuum cleaner, scrounged for free from a room full of ancient scrap equipment.

How can I go wrong when I give my lovely bride a gift called a "Golden Monarch?" It will make her feel like a queen!

Yep, I'm a regular Romeo. You guys out there can feel free to leave a comment if you need some more tips from Mr. Smooth. Me, I'm going to go soak up some of that good lovin' I so richly deserve.

  1. If it runs at all, you could use it for a demonstration of why vacuuming up a flammable liquid (like gasoline) is a bad, bad idea. I expect that the motor probably has exposed brushes that will make a nice spark, and the flammable gasoline vapors would probably go right past it.

Just be sure to use a remote switch to turn it on.

  2. Yeah, I'm figuring there's a good chance the motor is at least partially seized up. I'm going to flip the "on" switch remotely while hiding behind something that can stop shrapnel.

Is there a better way to say, "I love you?"

  3. Hm. Actually, maybe you shouldn't do anything horrible to it. It looks like Filter Queen is still around, and they are sold as high-end vacuums.

It might be worth refurbishing, if only to sell to someone else.

  5. Thanks, Ivyan.

Tim, I want to take it apart and see if I can get it to run again.
