Here's their horrible, SharePoint-based site extolling the virtues of MSFT social networking tools. It looks like an assignment handed in by a 6th-grader who really, really, really didn't want to do it. To say they mailed it in would be an understatement.
I clicked around a bit on that site and came across this horror, what looks to be a homeless guy who wandered into a Booze Allen Hamilton facility and made a video in the bathroom where he suspended the video camera over a toilet.
The best part* is that the video is shown using Silverlight, MSFT's pathetic web technology that failed so badly they're now killing it off. If you don't have the Silverlight plug in for your browser, you can watch the video as a WMV file.
Yes, they still post WMV files and not just on their AngelFire sites.
And there you have it. Social Networking from one of the world's largest, wealthiest companies. It's sort of like this, only not so successful in its outcome.
* - It turns out that wasn't the best part. The best part was that the embed code provided on the MSFT site didn't work. There was an unclosed iframe tag. Unbelievable.
Just one more example of how the Internet has made our lives better: any time you think to yourself, "Hey, I really need a video of a cat throwing up!", within mere seconds you can have not just one video, but a wide selection!
ReplyDeleteSee, this is what differentiates us from the NoKos. Here in the capitalist US, the market chooses the best cat vomit video. In communist North Korea, the government would choose. If you ever needed a reason to pick freedom over tyranny, that would be it.
ReplyDeleteA pеrson nеcеssaгily hеlp to make critically articles I'd state. This is the very first time I frequented your web page and to this point? I surprised with the research you made to make this actual post incredible. Fantastic job!

Well just for a change let me defend Microsoft.
ReplyDeleteSilverlight was not a pathetic web technology. It was much better than flash in many ways and I would rather program for Silverlight than Flash any day since it wasn't a crappy language like ActionScript. Netflix which consumes a big chunk of internet streaming used Silverlight for all desktop browsers and it worked quite well.
The problem with Silverlight is the problem Microsoft has time and time again. Too late to the game. By the time Silverlight was worthwhile mobile computing hit and mobile browsers don't use any plug-ins (a good thing in my estimation). So for once MS saw the future and dead-ended Silverlight.
As for their Sharepoint social site, let us just say I am as fond of sharepoint as I am of powerpoint.
