Tim, you're absolutely right. Cats curls up and expose less surface area as the temperature drops. The last step is to bury their nose in their curled-in front paws and breath through their fur, which they do when it is very, very cold. As the temperature rises, they stretch out more and more.
Way back when, there were days I'd leave the heat off during the winter. It would get down into the low 40s in the house at night. Our Maximum Leader would crawl into bed with me, get under the covers and burrow down to my thighs to curl up and sleep there. She'd give me this look that said she thought I was crazy.
That explains their ability to conform to random shapes.

ReplyDelete(the idea is that a resting cat gets longer as the temperature goes up, so if you have a cat and a yardstick, you can use it as a thermometer)
