What he really said:
"We all remember Abraham Lincoln as the leader who saved our Union. Founder of the Republican Party. But in the middle of a civil war, he was also a leader who looked to the future - a Republican President who mobilized government to build the Transcontinental Railroad launch the National Academy of Sciences, set up the first land grant colleges."PBS' transcript:

But in the middle of a Civil War, he was also a leader who looked to the future - a Republican president who mobilized government to build the transcontinental railroad; launch the National Academy of Sciences; and set up the first land grant colleges."Emphasis mine. Abraham Lincoln was not the founder of the Republican Party.
The only reason to do this would be to keep the "(Rick Perry / Sarah Palin / Michelle Bachman) is a dunce" meme alive.
They're not even trying to be subtle any more.
How very 1984 of them.
ReplyDeleteSloppy, sloppy! I know you're better than this KT. Get the story straight.
ReplyDeleteEDITOR’S NOTE: The original transcript provided on this page, as was noted, reflected the president’s remarks as prepared for delivery and released by the White House. This transcript has been updated to reflect the remarks as delivered and released by the White House.
So the erroneous Lincoln comment was part of an earlier draft, not the actual speech delivered. This happens all the time since these speeches are tweeaked up until the last minute.
The link to the attributing blog states that the editors note was added after the fact.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I can tell, he actually said it.
ReplyDeleteSounds more to me like the White House screwed up, figured it out too late and then gave excuses to its house organs in the press who dutifully reported what they were told.
ReplyDeleteThe guy said it, he reads of teleprompters and one presumes the teleprompters were programmed with something.
