"Its higher price indicates to me that it is superior, and that not everyone will be able to afford it, which only makes me want to possess it more," said Tim Sturges, owner of the old device, which he obtained 18 months ago when it was still the new device. "I feel a strong urge to purchase the new device. Owning the new device will please me and improve my daily life."
You know, the dinosaurs *were* the dominant large land animals for pretty nearly 160 million years[1] (almost three times as long as the time since they became extinct). It's not like they were *failures*, or anything. Being a dinosaur is nothing to be ashamed of.
[1] And as long as there are still birds, there's a good case to be made that they aren't really extinct even now, and are arguably still more successful (approx. 10,000 species worldwide) than the mammals (approx. 5000 species worldwide).
I am absolutely loving mine. Best eBook reader I have had along with being a great portable game machine along with lots of other functionality. The battery life is even better than advertised 11 to 12 hours using it. Browsing on it is intuitive and the form factor makes it a truly portable computer. While it is not meant to totally replace a regular computer it is what I would take on vacation with me instead of my laptop. It is also really fast. Netbooks are slow and clunk, but the iPad responds instantly and you can work with graphics in zooming, etc with no noticeable delay. Certainly not a device everybody needs, though after people use it - it is one they will want. The other programmers at my work who were skeptical of the iPad had their impression changed after checking out mine.
Though I know your anti-Apple bias which is fine with me. I also use to be an Apple hater and people can like whatever they want to like.
Your non-interest in the device is based on your Apple hating.
Mine is based on my Apple distrust. I, over the last 12-18 months, have come to really hate the Apple way of design is way more important than function. I have a Macbook Pro, I bought used a couple years ago. Great computer. Terrible battery. I've replaced it twice.
So Apples solution is to make the battery not replaceable?
I had a Time Capsule, 18 months, the power supply burns out, because of the design of the case. Just like all the other ones.
The iPad is twice as expensive as it should be.
What I'd really like is a iPad sized thing running Android. With a vpn that I could use to get into work. The VPN is the only superior feature I've found in the iPhone to the Droid.
Actually, mine is based on not caring. I wanted to stop by Jeff's blog and suggest that the iPad hasn't improved his blogging (it really hasn't ), but I like him too much to snarl at him like that.
