Me, I'm not going to eat one until I can catch a peanutbutterfish at the same time and make a sandwich.
Fox News* is reporting an invasion of the beasties off of Japan due to warming waters.
This year's jellyfish swarm is one of the worst he has seen, Hamano said. Once considered a rarity occurring every 40 years, they are now an almost annual occurrence along several thousand miles of Japanese coast, and far beyond Japan. Finally, check out this video. I had no idea they were that huge.
Scientists believe climate change — the warming of oceans — has allowed some of the almost 2,000 jellyfish species to expand their ranges, appear earlier in the year and increase overall numbers, much as warming has helped ticks, bark beetles and other pests to spread to new latitudes.
* - Fox News?!? Someone better tell them their reputation as right-wing hacks is at stake here!
Two things:
ReplyDelete1. Holy Cow! Those things are monsters! They *sank a fishing boat?!* (granted, it was because they made the nets too heavy, but still . . .)
2. Glass Jellyfish
Insert Japanese monster movie joke here.
ReplyDeleteThese are a tad bigger then the ones you see at the aquarium!
ReplyDeleteProof that even Fox news makes mistakes and tells a fact on occasion. ;-)
Global warming is causing more jellyfish off Japan?
ReplyDeleteSo it's not that the Japanese have had a good go at eating all of the natural predators you listed then? That's good.
(Resumes AGW panic)
very nice information and the video wasn't bad enough by the way, I've been looking this kind of imagines through Youtube and I couldn't get lucky about it so I won't avoid this blog because it's a useful tool. 23jj
