All of the predicitions from right wing pundits that Barack Obama would try negotiating with the Somali pirates turned out to be wrong. Instead, he OK'd the Navy's request to shoot the pigs. Well done, sir.
Actually he did both. The Navy first attempted to negotiate and them shot them. Kinda like give them a fair trial and then hang them. It will be interesting to see what they do with the one surviving pirate.
As Kelly notes, FBI hostage negotiators spent the weekend chatting with the pirates. I hope the reality-based TV series don't get any ideas.... "Flashpoint:Mogadishu" sounds like a dreadful show.
I'd love to see video of the snipers though.. imagine seeing the three rifle barrels doing a synchronized dance as the ships rolled in the waves...
As satisfying the outcome happened to be, it appears to have had little long term impact - three more ships have been captured. I wonder how does one deal with this? There's no government to punish like in the past. A land invasion isn't worth the cost. What about a Naval interdiction?
Kelly, I would think you'd have to go Roman on the whole countryside. I all you were trying to do was kill people and break things, I don't think it would cost much in lives or money.

Almost all of the blogs that I read have applauded the action. It's good to see that the we're not totally overcome with Obama Derangement Syndrome.

ReplyDeleteI will only support President Obama when he's killing people.
