The Walls are Coming Down!

... just like Obama said they would. In this case, it's the walls between the MSM and the Obama campaign. The two have now merged. Gwen Ifill, the moderator in tonight's VP debate is writing a book entitled, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. She will be financially rewarded if Obama wins the election. The reaction in the MSM? Yawn.

There's no barrier left at all between the two.

  1. You know its always poor taste to start comparing political opponents to Nazi's - no matter what side. It simply diminishes the horror holocaust! Something I know you had no intention doing.

  2. Sadly, no one knows the name of Zimbabwe's minister of propaganda.

Let me see if I can change that. Hmmmm.

In the meantime, does it bother you at all to see Gwen as the moderator?

  3. OK, I just pulled the whole Goebbels comparison. Thanks for the suggestion.

  4. Look Kelly, comparisons to the Nazi's are a reach - I hope.

But when I see the Media join with any political party, when I see people infringing on conservative political expression, when I see threats against those that speak their minds against the leftist candidate (I have a link to this, but it's broken currently, if it starts working later I'll come back and post it), or even when I just see "Hitler-youth-like" sing-a-longs, well, then I worry.

And you should too. My First Amendment Rights might go first, but yours will be sure to follow.

  5. When I first saw the picture, I had myself a good chuckle viewing it in the context of "our little joke here in the Theocracy" but then I read KtD's comment and thought, "yep, he's right".

We right-wingers hate it when we're depicted as Nazis and though we can make all the arguments we want about how the liberal/Left is closer ideologically to the Nazis... it doesn't matter. It's the Nazis and you don't go there.

To KT's point, it would indeed be a hoot if he posted Mao's Minister of Culture's picture... if we knew who the guy was.

Re: Gwen Ifill. I throw up my hands. There does not even seem to be the concern for "appearance of impropriety" in this election.

  7. Dean, they've stopped pretending. That's when it's time to worry.

  8. I was/am pretty mad about this - but I have to say, Ifill did a good job. Far better, more even, less gotcha than pretty much any of the debates I have seen in the last few elections.

That's to her credit. Big time.

BUT - this should never have been allowed to happen, to even get to the point where I could make that observation. Flat out, with a book coming out on inauguration day, she should not have been anywhere close to something as important as moderating a debate.

THAT is to the journalism community, and PBS's discredit.

I do have a question about the choice of moderator, though: I thought that these debates were supposed to be carefully negotiated between the campaigns, with a lot of back-and-forth where both sides agreed to the venue, the topic, what type of podiums to use, the time allowed for questions and rebuttals, the lighting angles . . . and, oh yes, who they will get to be the moderator. I have to assume that McCain's people said, at some point and after some wrangling, "Oh, ok, Ifill will be fine."

The thing is, this can't have happened all that long ago. So, only *now* did people start thinking that Ifill might be a bit unbiased? I mean, maybe it was stupid of McCain's debate negotiators to accept Ifill, or maybe they got snowed somehow. Or, maybe they were familiar enough with her to think that, even with her known biases, she'd still try to do right by everybody (as seems to have been the case). But surely, if they did make a mistake in accepting her, it's nobody's fault but their own, isn't it?

I mean, I'm all for holding Obama's feet to the fire to see which way he squeaks, but blaming *his* campaign for McCain's *own* campaign's screw-ups seems a bit rich to me.

  10. Wait... so who are you supporting? HAha, just kidding. Glad I dropped by and everything is okay.

  11. Tim, the McCain is trying to walk a tightrope between fussing that the press is favoring Obama and acting like it isn't happening. They're in a no-win situation here. No matter what they say, the MSM will have the last word because they control the airwaves. I've seen plenty of criticism of how they allowed Ifill to moderate the debate, but I can't see what else they could have done.

Also, I think that the news about Ifill's book was held back until after she had been chosen to moderate the debate.
