Michelle Obama Complaining About Student Loans

...comes from one of her standard stump speeches.
And then you’ve got the other half of young people who were like me and Barack, who too, out loans to pay for our college. So yeah, we have Ivy League degrees, but they cost us a whole lot of money to get. And see, what we did was what we thought we were supposed to do. We got those fancy degrees, and then we left corporate America, and went to work in the community. And with every job we took, we made less money...(W)here we found ourselves, in a position like most young couples, with our PhD’s and JD’s and MPh’s and WLMOP’s, all those wonderful degrees, all mired in debt. We had not paid off our loan debts until just a few years ago. Barack couldn’t even run for president.
Synopsized: We borrowed money from the rest of you to get our degrees from Ivy League schools. We took our own sweet time paying it back because we felt like it. It sucks to be us.

She then goes on to talk about how lousy the country is and how things are getting worse all the time. Gratitude is totally alien to her. It sounds like an Ivy League version of Rev. Wright.

  1. Oh, KT, you're just a bitter American and the reason that this is a down-right mean country.

I'm amazed you could type when you're clinging to your guns and Bible.

Poor Michelle, struggling along on $300K/yr.

Isn't there some Debt Forgiveness for Deadbeats government program that could have stepped in to help?

I think you're interpretation of M. Obama's comments is unfair and inaccurate. The point she's making--and it's one many of us have made--is that as Americans we're just EXPECTED to borrow money to pay for practically everything, but especially school, in part because we feel like we're supposed to. But the reality of debt is serious, I mean, just look at our trade deficit. Americans should be able to study at the best school they get into without carrying so much debt--regardless of what race or political affiliation they have. Lastly, it's not because the Obama family said "ah fuck it, I don't want to pay my loan," but because the compounded interests is so high. There are so many people who are paying off their student loans until they're 60 years old. . . there's something wrong with that.

    Why?

Going to an expensive school is not a right, and taking out a loan is supposed to mean taking responsibilty.

Let's change that statement into this one:

"Americans should be able to own the best car they are capable of driving without carrying so much debt."

  6. Exactly! Why should it be free? I think that basic college education at a State school, should be within the financial reach of most Americans. But the Obamas went to what are among the most expensive schools in America. Don't expect those of us that are trying to get our own kids through to be sad that they had to take out loans to do that.

In fact, that they got into great (expensive) schools and were able to borrow the money to attend those schools, is a reason they should be on their knees every night and day thanking God that they are in this country, not whining that they had to pay the money back.
