Black Jewel Orchid

...mine is blooming. It's the worst orchid I own, but it's the only one that blooms consistently. Talk about boring!

You're just not trying hard enough, Mr. Black Jewel!

Here's what orchids can look like if they put their minds to it.

I have some that are this pretty, but they spend all their time pouting.

  1. OOOHHHH, AAAAHHHH. Plants just love southern California weather. When we moved from the central coast, we gave almost everything we had to my parents, and they've bloomed like nothing we ever saw when we had them.

  2. I'm jealous - I have not been able to get orchids to grow. The one person I know who has success says the secret is neglect, but that didn't work for me either.

The Jewel Orchid is grown only for its leaves. It doesn't put out pretty flowers like the purple one you pictured, that's a Dendrobium. Jewel orchids will put out the spire and only produce those little flowers.

Thanks for the comment, anon. I didn't know that.

  5. My cat keeps trying to eat the leaves of my Black Jewel orchid. I know that orchids are usually considered non-toxic to cats, but does that go for all species of orchid?

Has anyone's cat ate their black jewel and been okay?
