Dying Is Incredibly Inconvenient

... for your survivors.

I've spent a ton of time dealing with paperwork and forms and mailings and lawyers since mom died. You know, if she'd been a thoughtful, loving person, she'd have taken care of all of this before she went.

Some people are so inconsiderate!

I'm sorry for your loss.

Yes, I hear you. When my wife's parents died several years ago, she and her brother spent over a year getting things sorted out. The fact that her parents didn't bother with writing wills didn't help. After that, she and I immediately wrote up wills to simplify things for our daughters.

I don't know how quickly things are going with my parents (who both passed away within the last year), because they were in Australia, and my brother who went to Australia with them is mostly looking after things. At least they both had wills.

My grandmother pre-paid and planned out her funeral down to the recessional music. (baby elephant walk)

Make a trust and put all of your assets into the trust. That's KT's advice. My parents did that and now we're simply grinding through the legal sausage maker to execute the trust, but it's still requiring time to notify the utilities, insurance and local organizations of my mom's death and make the necessary changes to her accounts.
