So You Still Want To Stand Up For Charlie Hebdo?

... after seeing this? It took less than 30 seconds to find that. There's more. Lots more.

There you go, absolutist free-speechers. Those are your teammates.

When the Black Panthers shoot up a Klan cookout, how many of you will be wearing Confederate flags and singing Dixie as you march through the streets?

Count me out.

I'll explain one last time.

They have a right to publish purile crap.

I have a right to ignore it.

You have a right to be offended by it, and call them any horrible names you might like.

But nobody has the right to kill anyone over it.

And while you aren't quite coming out and saying as much, you are pretty strongly hinting that while you wouldn't have taken the chance and killed them yourself, you are not sorry that somebody did. And I think that is an irresponsible position, because we all annoy somebody at some point, and none of us are immune from somebody wanting us dead. And if you go around suggesting that murdering people for the things that they say is *ever* "understandable", who's to say that someone isn't going to decide sometime that *you've* gone over the line about something, and murder you?

And don't tell me that you would never go over what someone else might consider "the line". I'd suggest reviewing the things you've posted here since 2006, and seriously ask yourself if you are absolutely certain that *none* of it could strike sufficiently fanatical people as a reason to do away with you?

So what you're basically saying is that there are limits to free expression, beyond which any form of retribution is justified. Blame the victim, very nice.

Even worse, you seem content to let theocratic terrorists decide these limits for us, and are assuming that once such limits are set, that's where they'll stay.

I'm not sure if you're more cowardly or foolish, because you set a pretty high bar for both.

Just as I have been defending hate speech against the left's depredations; we have to defend this garbage as well. It's a bedrock principle of our civilization that helps keep us free.
I personally don't wish to offend Muslims, but I think there is a duty to offend when the response is terrorism and murder.

First off, it's not so long ago that the CH covers would have been disallowed in the US due to decency laws, so let's not get too carried away with the Sacred American Right of Free Speech.

Second, if you walk around Compton after dark wearing a Confederate flag t-shirt, that's free speech, too. Free speech or no, you're going to end up in a morgue and the cops will have to investigate. No one is going to use the hashtag #IAmTheKlan after you get offed. Not sure why that doesn't apply here.

Third, by siding with these swine, we've confirmed everything the more strident imams have been preaching for years - the West hates Islam and has the moral outlook of an alley cat.

Finally, it looks like there's going to be some rumbles in the streets of Paris and elsewhere after this. If my town is going to host gangs of punks going at it with handguns, baseball bats and Molotov cocktails, I'd sure like the reason to be something a little better than a 3rd grade atheist porno rag.

B-Daddy, the Romans lost the battle of Cannae when they allowed Hannibal to choose the place and time. You don't have to attack the enemy every time he presents himself and you don't have to defend every last hill or village. Sometimes the smart thing is to let a potential fight go.

Tim, re: Me not be sorry to see them whacked. It seems to me that the people at CH didn't give a rat's rear end about the rest of us as they continually incited the French Muslims to riot by producing this filth. All they did was give the worst imams ammunition, day in and day out. In short, the folks at CH didn't care about you at all.

Stand with Charlie all you want. They didn't stand with you.

re: Me getting whacked. Yep, it could happen. That's part of communicating about politics and culture.

Anon, walk into a biker bar and yell that everyone who rides a Harley is a sissy. After you get out of the hospital, you can condemn the rest of us for not supporting you.

Hey, there shouldn't be any limits on free speech, right?

One more thing. In a cultural war like this, the morons at Charlie Hebdo had been handing freight trains of ammunition to the other side. It's doubtful if they could have done any worse for the cause of the West against Islamofascism.

Name calling, blasphemy, and hate speech are never justifications for violence. Attempting to argue that they can be says a lot about you as a person.
