Freaking Out The French

At the recent UN and G-20 blatherfests, our president had this to say: "No one nation can or should try to dominate another nation." French President Nicolas Sarkozy freaked out. "We live in the real world, not in a virtual one," he exclaimed. Poor Nick is starting to wake up to the horrible fact that he and his Euro pals have gotten just what they asked for - a squishy, multilateralist, appeasenik American president. Sorry, Nicky, no returns without a receipt!

Memo to the president: next time you want to expound your faculty lounge, bong smoke theories about international relations, try not to do it in front of a president of France.

France, June, 1940 - no domination here!

I'm afraid I don't see your point about "try not to do it in front of a president of France." It's about time somebody shook up France enough to stand up to the threats in their own backyard, even if he didn't mean to. Berating the French government about being unhelpful in the past hasn't made much impression on them. So, maybe letting them think they will be left on their own to twist slowly, slowly in the wind will get through to them.

Whoops. I was looking for Marc Garlascos's home page and stumbled on yours. Sorry.

Tim, it was within a current, living generation of Frenchmen that their country was indeed dominated by another. They're even still digging up unexploded ordnance and skeletons from the war before that. As feckless as the French have been, reducing their military to a batallion of hairdressers and a precision Poodle walking squad, you can't stand in front of their leader and say "No nation can dominate another." They're sure to have a spaz attack.

Jeff, I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make, but allow me to underscore mine.

If you don't beat the stuffing out of bad people, they'll do it to you. If you wait long enough to stand up to them, they'll run right over you.
